Interview with Fleur

What inspires you to create children’s books?

I recall as a child the sheer delight when being read a funny, nonsensical story. I also had a fascination for books that touched on serious life themes. Today I find myself compelled to empower children to overcome personal issues through humor and the igniting of their imagination.

What do you love most about being an Author?

I love the magic of storytelling. One of my fondest memories growing up was the holiday ritual of sharing a huge bunk room with cousins and the nightly story-circle that ensued. Someone would begin and the next would add to it. The story would continue into the dead of the night with gasps, laughter and shock at the ridiculous twists and turns throughout its journey. Anything was possible, characters were compelling and bolshie. There were villains, vagabonds, the assertive, courageous and majestic. With storytelling, anything is possible.

What do you love most about being an Illustrator?

I find it and intriguing and very satisfying to watch my characters evolve from words-to-sketches and then into final works.

What’s your most rewarding moment as a writer-illustrator?

When the finished mock-up is introduced to little people and is met with giggles, “oohs” and discussion. But the golden moment is hearing the words “Read it again!”
